Dual Language Immersion

Alum Rock Union Elementary School District is proud to offer a rigorous and award-winning Dual Language Immersion Program at three district schools. Dual Immersion programs blend two language education models: a language immersion program for English-only speakers and a bilingual maintenance model for English learners. Through this academic language model, both groups attend class together allowing students the opportunity to learn from one another and serve as language models for second language acquisition. Research shows that bilingualism enhances cognitive development and broadens educational and professional opportunities. Students completing our program achieve bilingual proficiency and literacy in two languages, as well as develop multicultural competencies, paving the way for future careers in our global economy.

Spelling Bees

At our school, the Spelling Bee is a joyful tradition that celebrates language, learning, and perseverance. Each year, we hold two exciting competitions—one in English and one in Spanish—giving our students the chance to shine in both of the languages that shape our community. Preparing for the Spelling Bee helps students expand their vocabulary, sharpen their spelling skills, and gain confidence speaking in front of others. Most importantly, it teaches them that effort and practice lead to growth. The Spelling Bee is not just about winning—it’s about celebrating every participant’s courage, determination, and love of words. Together, as classmates, teachers, and families, we applaud their achievements in both languages that make our school truly special.

Socioemotional Learning and Wellness Center

School Counselors serve all students to aid in reaching their full potential in the areas of social-emotional learning, academic success, and college/career exploration. Students are supported through classroom lessons, small groups and/or individual short-term counseling. The program also works to collaborate with families and staff to provide a solid system of support and knowledge for students.
The Wellness Center is a safe and calm space for all (i.e. students, staff, and families) to briefly reset in order to welcome whole wellness through mental health services.
